The Royals optioned there proclaimed “ace” of the starting rotation today. Yordano Ventura has had a rough sophomore season that has seen him deal with injuries, emotional outburst in games, and uninspired pitching performances.

The youngster has an era of 5.19. The demotion to Omaha comes off a start where Ventura went 4.0 innings allowing 6 Earned runs in a 10-7 loss to the Pittsburg Pirates. The Royals have been rumored to be in the trade market for a starting pitcher. Some of those rumors shifted the Royals looking for another outfield bat to fill the void left by Alex Gordon’s injury that will have him out till September. In a perfect world the Royals would be able to pick up a bat for the offense and a big time starting pitcher, however, it is likely they will only get one of those options.

They are also faced with the decision of getting a player who will be a free agent at the end of this year or taking on a multi-year deal of a front line starter. With the payroll already a franchise record of 130 million I would guess they are going the “rent-a-player” route. This means guys like Johnny Cueto and David Price may be guys they try to get. As far as the offensive side of the equation guys like Yoenis Cespedes and Ben Zobrist make the most sense. With Ventura being sent down and Gordon being injured the Royals will have to make a big decision on what to do before the trade deadline on July 31st. The one thing this club can’t do is to do nothing at all. This team has a chance to make it back and win the World Series.

The front office has to make a move or multiple moves to help this team down the stretch. Luckily, despite all the issues, injuries, and lack luster starting pitching, the Royals still hold the best record in the American League.
