Entering his 10th year in the league, Alex Smith signs a 4-year $68 million dollar extension to remain with the Kansas City Chiefs for the foreseeable future.

The deal will pay Smith roughly $17-million per year over 4 years, with a reported $45-million in guarantees. The finer details of the contract will become public in the coming days, which will give us a real idea of who ‘won’ the extension.

Pro Football Talk reports Smith is guaranteed $30 million at signing and another $15 million in injury guarantees in March 2015.

It might seem like a lot of money, but in the next few years the salary cap will rise rapidly with new TV contracts soon coming in. With the cap set for a steep incline it made sense for Chiefs’ General Manager John Dorsey to get the deal done. This means that Smith has, at minimum, a 2+ year leash in Kansas City.
