The Capital Region Amphitheater was packed to near capacity Friday night as Hairball rolled into Jefferson City and reminded everyone why they’ve become one of the most remarkable live acts in rock music.

More than just a tribute band, Hairball is a full-scale arena rock production that somehow manages to capture the spirit, energy and excess of the biggest bands of the ’70s and ’80s—all in one unforgettable evening.

From the opening notes, the traveling rock ‘n’ roll freak show unleashed a relentless assault of arena anthems spanning Motley Crue, Journey, Quiet Riot, Ozzy Osbourne, KISS, Guns N’ Roses, AC/DC and countless others. Every song was met with deafening singalongs from a crowd that never seemed to run out of energy.

The production itself is staggering. Three powerhouse lead singers traded off throughout the night, backed by a thunderous rhythm section anchored by a massive drum riser. Add in towering pyrotechnics, fire breathing, explosions, elaborate costume changes and enough visual spectacle to rival many national touring acts, and it’s easy to understand why Hairball has become one of rock’s greatest anomalies.

In a recent interview on On the Road to Rock, vocalist Patrick Stone perfectly described what makes Hairball so special.

“I was in total awe of how the crowd sings along to these songs. I go and see the original bands and I don’t see the crowds singing along as loud as they do to us. It’s so unique. It’s an anomaly. It’s a freak of nature.”

Watching Friday night’s audience, it’s impossible to argue with him. Thousands of voices filled the amphitheater nearly every chorus, creating an atmosphere that often felt bigger than many performances from the original artists themselves.

Perhaps that’s Hairball’s greatest achievement. Rather than simply impersonating legendary bands, they’ve become caretakers of an entire era of rock music. Their concerts aren’t about nostalgia alone—they’re celebrations of songs that continue to unite generations of fans.

After more than two hours of nonstop classics, the evening reached its thunderous finale as vocalist Dave Moody led the band through AC/DC’s “T.N.T.” and “Thunderstruck.” It was the perfect ending to a marathon performance that never lost momentum.

As fans slowly filed toward the exits, many were still singing their favorite songs from the night while applauding what is unquestionably one of the hardest-working bands in live entertainment.

Hairball has become the last bastion of keeping many of these legendary bands—and more importantly, their music—alive in a true arena-rock setting. In an era when many of rock’s icons have retired or are nearing the end of their careers, that’s something every rock fan should cherish.
