The Chiefs wrapped up the 2022 preseason slate with a 17-10 win over Green Bay on Thursday night. The team now will look ahead to the season opener September 11th at Arizona. On August 30th, KC will officially cut its roster down to 53 and preparation for the regular season will begin. The Chiefs have won six straight division titles and played in four consecutive AFC West title games at home but there are certainly a few identifiable weaknesses heading in to 2022.
While things are fairly settled throughout the Chiefs roster, salary cap and the 53-man roster make it difficult to field a team devoid fo weaknesses.
Chiefs biggest weaknesses 2022
- Right Tackle. While Brett Veach has done a tremendous job revamping the offensive line, right tackle remains a mystery. Currently, journeyman Andrew Wiley is slated to be the starter as former third-round pick Lucas Niang begins the year on the PUP list and, quite frankly, has not worked out in general.
- Running back. Sure, we all love Isiah Pacheco’s story coming out of Rutgers in the seventh round of the draft but this position is dreadfully thin. Andy Reid has not relied on a consistent running game throughout his coaching career and that will likely be the case once again as former first-round pick Clyde Edwards-Helaire has failed to live up to the billing and the rest of the bunch (Ronald Jones,Jerick McKinnon etc are just guys).
- Defensive End. Sure there is a lot of youth in the secondary and replacing incumbents like Tyrann Mathieu and Charvarious Ward will be difficult. Despite drafting DE Geroge Karlaftis out of Purdue in the first round, the position remains dangerously thin behind he, the always underperforming Frank Clark and grizzled veteran Carlos Dunlap.
