I became a serious Kansas City Chiefs fan in 1993 and since that season we have not had any postseason success. I thought I’d make a list of my top 5 regular season moments during my 21 years of being a Chiefs fan.  Honorable Mention

rudd toss

September 8th, 2002 – Chiefs @ Browns – Dwayne Rudd Helmet Toss – The Chiefs are down 39-37 with :04 left on their own 47 yard line. Browns LB Dwayne Rudd shoots in and knocks Chiefs QB Trent Green to the ground. Dwayne Rudd thought he had sacked Trent Green thus ending the game and in celebration he rips his helmet off and tosses is down the field. However, Trent had shoveled the ball forward which was caught by Chiefs RT John Tait who rumbled down field before being pushed out of bounds. The refs had thrown a flag for Rudd taking his helmet off during the play and awarded the Chiefs 15 yards from where the play ended along with an untimed down. The Chiefs brought on Morten Andersen who kicked the game winning field goal as the Chiefs went on to win 40-39 and started the season off 1-0.

Personal Memory – I was watching this game with my brothers and we all figured the game was over since we needed a hailmary pass to win and as John Tait was finally ushered out of bounds we started to get upset and walk away from the T.V. The announcers then came on describing what had happened and that the Chiefs would get a chance at a field goal. As we stood there in complete shock we watched as Morten Andersen kicked the game winning field goal only to start laughing and making fun of a ridiculous mistake that Rudd had made.

RISON MCDANIELSeptember 8th, 1997 – Monday Night Football Chiefs @ Raiders – The Chiefs are down to the Raiders 27-22 with :10 left on the Raiders 32 yard line. Chiefs QB Elvis GrBac throws a beautiful deep ball to Andre Rison over two defenders in the back of the endzone as the Chiefs go on to win 28-27 and move to 1-1 early in the season.

Personal Memory – I remember watching this game with my dad while everyone else in the house was sleeping. I felt sick to my stomach thinking there was no way that we could pull it out and would lose to our much hated rival. When Andre Rison caught that touchdown, I remember jumping up and hitting my knuckles on the ceiling and waking everyone up with my screams.

stoyoNovember 16th, 1997 – Broncos @ Chiefs – Chiefs are down 22-21 with :04 left on the clock when Chiefs kicker Pete Stoyanovich lines up for the 54 yard field goal. Pete drills a knuckle ball that inches over the crossbar as the Chiefs beat Denver and traitor Neil Smith, 24-22 to move to 8-3 on the season.

Personal Memory – I remember my dad and brother on the couch saying that there was no way he could make that long of a kick and the game was over. I was on the floor in the kitchen knelt down and not even watching as the announcers set the scene. Once Pete was about to kick I looked up and will never forget Dick Enberg’s call for as long as live, “55, now they say 54 on the spot. IT’S UP, IT’S HIGH ENOUGH, IT IS GOOD!!!!! OH MY, KANSAS CITY WINS!!!!”

joe monday magicOctober 17th, 1994 – Monday Night Football Chiefs @ Broncos – Montana vs. Elway – Joe Montana and Marty Schottenheimer come into this game never having won in Mile High Stadium. The Chiefs are down 28-24 with :13 left on the clock and are on Denver’s 6 yard line. Montana Magic strikes again as Joe hits Chiefs WR Willie Davis who catches it just outside the endzone and barely sneaks back in for the go ahead touchdown. Joe and Marty finally get their win in Mile High Stadium as the Chiefs beat the Broncos 31-28 and move to 4-2 on the season.

Personal Memory – My two brothers and I were watching in my room while my parents yelled from the next room to go to bed! Of course we didn’t listen and when we driving the ball down the field we woke my dad up to come in and watch with us. Once Joe scored at the Chiefs won the game we all jumped up and started screaming, which I’m sure my mom appreciated. We all stayed up to watch the news so we could hear from the players and coaches after the game and needless to say I didn’t get much sleep on that school night.
