As the annual opening of the NFL’s free agency draws near, 3 PM is when clubs can officially sign new blood. The Kansas City Chiefs enter a pivotal off-season, one that could push them above expectations or take the wind out of their sails. In a year in which the salary cap rose once again it looks to be a year in flux contract-wise, as teams have more money than ever to dole out. It will be difficult to marry value and need for a lot of teams this free agency.
The Chiefs have already made SOME noise, franchise tagging safety Eric Berry before the fun even begins. Berry will count $10.8 million against the cap in 2016, unless GM John Dorsey and Berry’s agent can agree on a long term deal to keep Eric Berry in red and gold for good.
This morning, Kansas City legend Tamba Hali, 32, signed a 3-year extension to stay in KC the rest of his career. The deal is worth a reported $22 million, with $12 million guaranteed. The structure of the contract has not been released as of yet, but as soon as the parameters of the deal are known we will post an update. While it is unknown KC’s cap space currently as the details of Hali’s pact are still unknown, but before Hali’s deal it was around $18.75 million left. Remember, a long term deal with Berry could alleviate some room in the short term, so Kansas City still has room to operate.
Don’t forget to keep your eyes peeled as Kansas City starts their offseason officially at 3 PM, but in the meantime below is a list of the Chief’s pending free agents.
