The Chiefs (9-1) travel to Tampa to battle Tom Brady and the Buccaneers (7-4) this Sunday and will attempt to diverge from a sketchy history against the Bucs.

Sunday’s game will mark only the 13th time that these two franchises have met. Tampa currently holds a 7-5 series lead over Kansas City although most may not realize that the Bucs entered the league in 1976 as a member of the AFC West. The Chiefs won the only game in which the two faced off as division rivals 28-19 but it would be the Bucs that took control of the series in later years.

With the current NFL scheduling rotations, the Chiefs and Bucs meet every four years. Unbelievably, the last time the Chiefs got a win over Tampa Bay occurred back in 1993 when a guy named Joe Montana quarterbacked the Chiefs.

The Chiefs’ last win over the Bucs

September 5th, 1993- Joe Montana’s first game as Chiefs quarterback started off with a bang as he threw for 246 yards in a 27-3 Chiefs route. Montana would leave the game with a bruised wrist but not before the team secured its fourth straight season opening win under Marty Schottenheimer. Montana would throw touchdowns to Marcus Allen, J.J. Birden and Willie Davis during the contest.

Bucs win the last five

  • 1999 Bucs 17 Chiefs 10
  • 2004 Bucs 34 Chiefs 31
  • 2008 Bucs 30 Chiefs 27 (OT)
  • 2012 Bucs 38 Chiefs 10
  • 2016 Bucs 19 Chiefs 17

The last confrontation (2016)

The last times the two teams met was on November 20, 2016. The Chiefs’ 5-game winning streak was snapped by Jameis Winston’s Bucs as he carved up the Chiefs defense with 331 yards passing in the upset win.

The Chiefs, who had won 17 of their last 19 regular-season games, were done in by a popgun offense that has repeatedly fizzled in the red zone. They had to settle for a field goal by Cairo Santos on their first trip and Alex Smith threw an interception in the end zone midway through the fourth quarter.
