Columbia, MO

A sun-drenched, sold-out Memorial Stadium in Columbia bore witness to something Missouri football fans haven’t seen in quite some time.

And by the time the afternoon was over, there was no question about it.

Missouri wasn’t just better than No. 8 Florida. The Tigers manhandled the Gators.

With its season seemingly sitting on the brink following a heartbreaking loss at Mississippi State, Missouri responded in emphatic fashion Saturday, dismantling Florida 45-17 in one of the most impressive victories of the Eli Drinkwitz era.

It was Missouri’s first victory over a Top 10 opponent since 2013 and its first home victory over a Top 10 team since the Tigers stunned No. 1 Oklahoma in 2010.

And perhaps most importantly, it was a reminder that this Missouri team may have considerably more staying power than many were willing to believe a week ago.

Missouri Heard the Noise

The national chatter surrounding the Tigers heading into Saturday wasn’t exactly flattering.

Drinkwitz had gone 0-8 in his previous eight games against ranked opponents, and after the loss in Starkville, Missouri was staring down the barrel of one of the most difficult schedules in the country.

Quality victories were going to be precious.

Instead of folding, Missouri responded by putting together arguably its most complete performance of the season.

The Tigers executed.

They played fast.

They played physical.

And, perhaps most importantly, they played with confidence.

Florida never really had an answer.

Austin Simmons Announces Himself

For much of the season, Missouri has been searching for something it has desperately needed: a quarterback capable of elevating the Tigers against elite competition.

On Saturday, Austin Simmons looked like he might be that guy.

On one of the biggest stages Missouri has played on all season, Simmons delivered a performance that should put his name on the national radar.

The Mizzou quarterback threw for 320 yards and two touchdowns, repeatedly making the right decision and delivering the ball with confidence as the Tigers steadily pulled away.

There was no panic.

No hesitation.

Just poise.

Simmons looked like a quarterback who belonged in this moment — and perhaps a quarterback who has finally given Missouri the missing piece it has been searching for.

Jamal Roberts Runs Wild

While Simmons provided the aerial attack, Jamal Roberts absolutely terrorized Florida on the ground.

Roberts exploded for 211 rushing yards and three touchdowns, repeatedly ripping through the Gators’ defense and turning what could have been a competitive game into a rout.

And while Missouri’s offense deserves plenty of attention, the performance on the other side of the ball may have been even more impressive.

Florida entered the game with one of the nation’s premier running backs in Jaden Baugh.

Missouri made him virtually irrelevant.

12 carries.
13 yards.

That’s it.

Against a player capable of taking over a football game, the Tigers completely shut down Florida’s ground attack and forced the Gators to try to beat them another way.

They couldn’t.

A Complete Team Victory

That’s what made Saturday different.

This wasn’t a game where Missouri simply caught a few breaks or rode one player to victory.

The Tigers were dominant on both sides of the football.

The offense moved the ball.

The defense suffocated Florida’s rushing attack.

Special teams did its job.

And as the afternoon progressed, Missouri simply kept pulling away.

By the fourth quarter, the question wasn’t whether the Tigers were going to win.

It was just how big the final margin would be.

45-17.

The largest margin of victory Missouri has ever posted against a Top 10 opponent.

That’s not just a win.

That’s a statement.

From Brink of Disaster to Suddenly Interesting

One week ago, Missouri was coming off a devastating road loss at Mississippi State.

The Tigers had every reason to feel like their season was slipping away.

Instead, they walked into a sold-out Memorial Stadium and delivered one of the biggest performances in recent program history.

And suddenly, the outlook has changed.

Missouri still has an incredibly difficult road ahead.

But Saturday proved something important:

This team is capable of beating really good football teams.

And perhaps it has finally found the quarterback capable of helping it do it consistently.

Now Comes Texas A&M

The Tigers don’t have much time to celebrate.

Texas A&M comes to Columbia next.

The Aggies entered the season with legitimate College Football Playoff aspirations, but their conference campaign got off to a rocky start with consecutive losses to Kentucky and LSU before they responded by pounding Arkansas on Saturday.

That makes next week’s matchup fascinating.

Missouri has just demonstrated that it can dominate a Top 10 opponent.

Now it gets another opportunity to prove that Saturday wasn’t an anomaly.

A win over Texas A&M would give the Tigers another quality victory and put Missouri in an increasingly interesting position in the SEC standings.

Then comes Ole Miss.

And that’s where things could get really interesting.

Don’t Say Playoff Yet… But…

Let’s pump the brakes.

It’s probably a little early to start talking about the College Football Playoff.

Probably.

But string together victories over Texas A&M and Ole Miss, and suddenly that conversation becomes much harder to ignore.

Because Missouri just showed what this team can look like when everything clicks.

The Tigers looked talented.

They looked resilient.

They looked physical.

And, for the first time in quite some time, they looked like they may have finally found that elusive top-tier quarterback.

One week ago, Missouri’s season appeared to be teetering on the edge.

One week later, the Tigers have delivered the biggest statement of their season.

The road ahead remains brutal.

But after what happened on a sun-soaked Saturday in Columbia, one thing is abundantly clear:

Missouri isn’t going anywhere quietly.
