We officially have chaos on our hands after a wild and nearly unprecedented weekend of college football. Five top-10 teams went down and it’s clear that the College Football Playoff committee has some work to do as the season winds down.
Winners
Penn State. Don’t look now but the Nittany Lions are in a three-way tie in the Big 10 East after Michigan fell to Iowa Saturday night. If they beat Rutgers and Mighigan State, there is a real chance they could find themselves in the Big 10 Championship Game which absolutely NO ONE saw coming.
The Kansas camo kick returner. KU has been the worst FBS program in American for quite some time now and when you are that bad, why not try some off-the-cuff shenanigans? LaQuvionte Gonzalez was able to camouflage himself like a ninja during a kick return late in the game and it almost sort of worked.
Missouri/Iowa State. Two terrible teams won their first conference games on Saturday as ISU knocked off the aforementioned Kansas while Mizzou won an SEC game for the first time in 13 months with a home win against Vanderbilt.
Ohio State. Sure their loss to Penn State may cost them a shot at a Big 10 title but they are still very likely to get a playoff spot if they beat Michigan. The Buckeyes also have won 62-3 in constitutive weeks after pummeling both Nebraska and Maryland.
Tommy Armstrong. Came back a week after a scary head/neck injury to lead Nebraska to a win over Minnesota. Armstrong got hurt a couple times in the game but showed a tremendous amount of toughness in the victory. There is no doubt that he will go down as one of the best Huskers of the last 15 years.
Losers
CBS. The television network had everything to gain from an Auburn/Alabama match-up in two weeks that would likely have SEC Championship implications. Unfortunately, Auburn was upset at Georgia on Saturday which gives the SEC West to Alabama making the the game a mere formality at this point.
College Football Playoff Committee. Seriously, good luck! #2, #3 and #4 all lost this weekend which leaves Alabama alone atop the rankings. Will Louisville and Ohio State climb back into the top 4? Can Clemson or Michigan still get in? There is officially chaos and I love it. Also, the possibility of a two-loss Wisconsin team getting in if they win out just grew exponentially.
Texas Tech Kicker Clayton Hatfield. This poor bloke missed a game-tying extra point late in the game after the Red Raiders thought they had scored a touchdown that would send the game to overtime. As it stands, Oklahoma State survives and keeps their Big 12 Championship hopes alive for the time being.
Texas A&M. After inexplicably being ranked #4 in the first College Football Playoff poll, the Aggies have now dropped two straight games to sub-.500 teams. Ole Miss kicked a game winning field goal in College Station Saturday night to stun Texas A&M, and the Rebels were able to pull this off with true freshman quarterback Shea Patterson starting in place of Chad Kelly.
The Crying Arkansas Fan. The Hogs have been a roller coaster ride all season and you really never know which team is going to show up. The Razorbacks were bludgeoned at home by LSU this weekend and one Arkansas fan has finally had enough of the emotional ups and downs.
