The Kansas City Chiefs failed on a last second attempt to score a touchdown before halftime of last season’s AFC Championship. In the second half, the bottom fell out and the Chiefs squandered that 21-3 halftime lead. Patrick just recently spoke out about what transpired in the second half that lead to a disappointing end their season.
Patrick Mahomes on the AFC Championship vs. CIN

“We were playing not to lose in the second half of that game,”ย Mahomes told the Ringer. “The second half of that game, I donโt want to say we relaxed, but I mean when you lead like you did, you want to make sure you win the game, but you donโt want to play like youโre playing not to lose. And I feel like thatโs what we did. As a team, we were playing not to lose, we were playing just to get to the Super Bowl.
“If you look, they didnโt do much different from the first half to the second half. We just didnโt execute at a high enough level. They were playing the same coverages and we werenโt executing. Then momentum gets in the other teamโs favor and when youโre playing a good football team, bad stuff happens.”

โI think it was certainly a tough lesson last year to never take your eye off the prize and stay locked in for four quarters. Because these teams are all good, theyโre all talented, youโre only a bad series or two away from getting bounced in any round in any year.โ
