The Chiefs narrowly escaped Houston with an overtime win on Sunday. While it wasn’t the prettiest win, the game kept KC tied with the Buffalo Bills for the best record in the AFC which will be quite important for playoff seeding. The game went into overtime after a missed 51-yard field goal attempt from Harrison Butker, thought he Chiefs prevailed after a 25-yard Jerick McKinnon touchdown run.
A key play that led to the Chiefs having the ball deep in Texans territory occurred when Houston quarterback Davis Mills fumbled while attempting to scramble on the team’s first possession in the overtime period. KC had already been flagged for 10 penalties in the game by Carl Cheffers crew (the same crew that seemed to struggle in the Chiefs/Raiders game earlier in the season).
What happened next is somewhat unfathomable. In a report from Jesse Newell from the KC Star, Chiefs LB Willie Gay, who had gained possession of the ball on the bottom of a pile claims that he heard a referees voice saying that it’s “blue ball.”
Before a giant miscarriage of justice could take place, Gay jumped up and held the ball above his head which would not allow the officials to reasonably give the ball to the Texans. There have been many complaints about Carl Cheffers crew struggling during Chiefs games but this takes the cake.
