Perhaps now we know why it took a team so long to sign Tyrann Mathieu this offseason. The former Chiefs Pro Bowler was in search of a big contract extension this offseason, an extension that never came in Kansas City. As free agency drew to a close, the Saints took a flier on Matheiu who has been a starter for the first quarter of the season.

While the Saints won a back-and-forth game against the Seahawks on Sunday, one play stood out in particular. The play in question was a 55 yard TD pass from Seahawks QB Geno Smith to D.K. Metcalf. Clearly, Mathieu is making another “business decision” on this play as trying to stop the hulking beast that is Metcalf was likely futile on this play.

Likely, Mathieu would have been smashed to the ground or carried into the end zone anyway but this is just another example of Mathieu taking himself out of a play where contact seemed to be inevitable
