While everyone witnessed the Chiefs epic collapse in the AFC Championship game against Cincinnati two weeks ago, many are still wondering why and how? As the days have gone by, more and more info seems to be leaking out about a possible halftime blow-up that perhaps cost the Chiefs dearly.
While the Chiefs are left to lick their wounds and preparing to watch the Bengals play the Rams in Super Bowl LVI, all signs point to a major halftime debacle at Arrowhead Stadium during the AFC Championship game. We’ve heard tales of halftime “flare ups” between Patrick Mahomes and offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy before, but more and more it appears something drastic occurred which left the Chiefs broken and disheveled in the second half.
Halftime rumor mill
As has been corroborated by multiple sources, the popular rumor from Los Angeles during Super Bowl week is that Bieniemy wanted to kick the field goal at the end of the first half to put the Chiefs up 24-10. Andy Reid overruled this decision and let Mahomes run an additional play, one that was stopped short of the goal line which left the Chiefs without points before the half. One source on the matter is in fact sports handicapper Brandon Lang (portrayed by Matthew Mcconaughey in the 2005 film “Two For the Mondy).
While in the locker room, Bieniemy, visibly upset allegedly “confronted” Mahomes and a heated exchange began. Prior to entering the locker room, Bieniemy was visibly upset on the sidelines after the touchdown attempt failed. It is even plausible that Andy Reid himself was involved in the debate and attempted to diffuse the situation.
This story makes sense on many levels, including the stories which came out while Bieniemy was interviewing for head coaching jobs which stated that Bieniemy may not return to KC and that his contract was expiring.
We know Bieniemy has referred to Mahomes in the past as a “competitive prick” and that it’s not uncommon for things to become heated during an NFL game. Was the locker room a bit shell-shocked by the end of the half debacle? Was there some sort of fracture that occurred
