It was a bit of a rough night for referee Carl Cheffers as the crew seemed completely lost at times during the Chiefs/Raiders Monday Night football game at Arrowhead. One pivitol play occurred late in the second quarter when Chris Jones appeared to have wrestled the ball away from Raiders QB Derek Carr for a huge turnover. not so fast said Carl Cheffers who flagged Jones for one of the most inexplicable roughing the passer penalties in NFL history.

Chiefs head coach Andy Reid and 76,000 Chiefs fans would become unglued inside the stadium as the Raiders went on the kick a field goal on the drive. The Chiefs won the game in dramatic fashion, 30-29 but many are still talking about the horrendous call.

Referee Carl Cheffers on roughing call

Great reporting from ESPN’s Adam Teicher getting the inside scoop on this situation. Chris Jones has now been victimized by two of the most insane roughing penalties in NFL history within two weeks of each other. The explanation is obviously ridiculous beyond comprehension but at least there was one given by Cheffers.
