The NFL is set to begin in ten days and it’s only a matter of time before teams set up their final 53-Man roster and practice squad teams. Yesterday, I wrote an article about the Jaguars and what would the next step be for their rebuild. Whatever the next step is, they will do it without last years leading rusher for the team and former first rounder, Leonard Fournette. They waived him after failing to find a trade partner for the former first round pick. After the Jaguars declined his fifth-year option in May it was only a matter of time that things were going to end in Jacksonville. So, with all the moves the Jaguars have done and with all the draft capital and cap space they will have for next year, there’s no question now that they are competing for the #1 draft pick in next year’s draft.
Prince Amukamara Released by the Raiders
Another surprising move today was Prince Amukamara being released by the Raiders. The veteran cornerback was brought in to be a presence in the defensive backs room. However, word coming out of the Raiders camp in Nevada is that the 2020 first round draft pick Damon Arnette is excelling in camp. This move appears to have just been a simple numbers game with Lamarcus Joyner expecting to split time between safety and nickelback there was no more room for Amukamara due to the addition of fourth round pick Amik Robertson. Amik will back up Lamarcus Joyner and Trayvon Mullen who was already written as a starter before the season. Amukamara was the odd man out and sure maybe he would have taken a special teams role, but again there’s not much room there as second year players Isaiah Johnson and Keisean Nixon are returning and familiar with the special teams’ unit. It was just a numbers game for Amukamara. As the league gets underway next Thursday, expect more cuts coming up as everyone is getting ready for the new season to begin.
