Today, on the day of the deadline for the NFL’s franchised-tagged players to sign a long-term extension before the 2016 offseason, Justin Houston came to terms to stay in Kansas City for the next six years.
The deal was first reported by ESPN’s Adam Schefter, a monster six-year, $101 million dollar deal with $52.5 million guaranteed. Houston and his agent stood firm about his value, content with playing out the season on the $13.1 million dollar franchise tender if Kansas City didn’t step up. Chiefs’ GM John Dorsey certainly stepped up, rewarding the 2015 league leader in sacks (22) with the richest contract in Kansas City’s history as a franchise.
If the Chiefs are going to have any type of shot at dethroning the Denver Broncos in the race for the AFC West Houston will have to continue proving worthy of his new deal.
