Going into Day 2 of the NFL Draft (Rounds 2-3, which start at 6 PM central) Dorsey will have picks 37 and 59, although I would not be surprised at more movement up or down the board depending on how the cards fall. This draft’s true value has long been thought to lie in rounds 2-4, especially in the defensive line and linebacker pool.
Below is a list of prospects that would fit well in Kansas City, and could be targeted tonight. I will list possible 3rd round targets as well, in case we maneuver back into the 3rd. This draft is deep in these rounds, so any of these players could go in rounds 2-3 depending on each team’s individual draft boards/needs.
WR Michael Thomas, Ohio State:
Receiver with size, length and speed. QB play last season at Ohio State likely held him back from 1st round type of production.
WR Sterling Shephard, Oklahoma:
A stud in the mold of Tyler Lockett/Randall Cobb. Will be a high-volume slot WR at the next level and would provide Alex Smith with immediate help.
LB Myles Jack, UCLA:
A knee injury held Jack out from being a top 5 selection. Won’t need surgery this season even, will be a steal at this point.
LB Reggie Ragland, Alabama:
The question with Ragland is can he play all 3 downs at the next level? I think he can, which makes him very valuable with his elite run stuffing abilities.
CB Mackensie Alexander, Clemson:
Alexander didn’t have a single interception in his college career, this coupled with his 5″10 stature is what held him out of the 1st round. Would immediately start, with the tools to be very good in KC’s man-press scheme.
DE/OLB Emmanuel Ogbah, Oklahoma State:
Ogbah will likely be gone before Kansas City even picks at 37, pass rushers with athleticism are at a premium.
DE/OLB Noah Spence, Eastern Kentucky:
Character concerns pushed Spence out of Ohio State, and also the first round this season. One of the best pure pass rushers in this class.
DL A’Shawn Robinson, Alabama:
Robinson still being availabe is a testament to the defensive line depth this year. Robinson would allow the Chiefs to rotate their line and keep them fresh for the 4th quarter.
DL Jarran Reed, Alabama:
Reed would likely be a replacement for Dontari Poe if Kansas City let him walk as a free agent after this season. I think John Dorsey really likes Poe and will look elsewhere here.
OG Cody Whitehair, Kansas State:
Whitehair would plug and play at LG and solidify Kansas City’s interior.
S/CB TJ Green, Clemson:
Very athletic safety who many believe could play corner at the next level. Ran a mid 4.3 40 time and very versatile.
WR Braxton Miller, Ohio State:
Very raw and new to the WR position, but could immediately provide another layer to KC’s offense. If Miller gets better at his route running he will be VERY dangerous.
LB Jaylon Smith, Notre Dame:
Before his devastating injury, Jaylon Smith was highly regarded as the best defensive player in this draft. People are split on whether he can recover to 100%, I think he would be a worthy bet with KC’s second 2nd round pick.
CB Xavien Howard, Baylor:
Howard would be able to pair with Marcus Peters on the outsides and allow Phillip Gaines to stay in the nickel, keeping CB a strength.
CB Kendall Fuller, Virginia Tech:
Fuller would have been a first rounder if he hadn’t been injured midseason. He is a bit of a mystery at this point, having not been able to participate in the combine. Fuller’s tape, however, is very good.
LB Deion Jones, LSU:
In a day and age where most teams are passing more than ever, Jones would be a great fit to defend it. Jones ran a 4.4 40 at his pro day and would immediately pair with Derrick Johnson to be one of the most athletic/versatile LB corps league-wide.
S Vonn Bell, Ohio State:
Bell would aleviate the loss of Hussain Abdullah to retirement. This safety class is very top heavy, so I expect Bell to go early.
LB/S Su’a Cravens, USC:
Cravens is a bit of a wild card, many aren’t sure where he will play at the next level. I think he would be a moveable chess piece that defensive coordinator Bob Sutton would love to get his hands on.
