Despite ongoing threats of thunderstorms on Friday, May 27th, Foreigner took the stage at Downstream Casino’s spacious outdoor venue with a rousing rendition of the band’s classic song “Double Vision.” It would be a song that would merely set the tempo for a tremendous night of rock mega-hits.
Fortunately, the storms never manifested on this night, however, it would be the band’s thunderous performance that would stand out as they blazed through a flawless 11-song set that seemed to build momentum and excitement with each passing song.
Foreigner may be short on original members (in fact the lineup that played at the Downstream featured zero) but this is a band that is clearly firing on all cylinders and will continue to win over even the harshest of critics through their high-energy and sonically pleasing performances.
Vocalist Kelly Hansen is truly one of the greatest singers in rock today and flawlessly belted out memorable songs like “Cold as Ice,” “Dirty White Boy,” and “Urgent.” It is undoubtedly his vocal prowess that gives the band its unmistakable identity in 2016, although terrific musicians like Jeff Pilson (bass), Thom Gimbel/Bruce Watson (guitars) and Chris Frazier (drums) are instrumental in creating the band’s sound.
“Foreigner is a high-energy group.” Pilson told us during a recent interview on the Music Mania Podcast. “We have a new life. It’s a testimony to these great songs and people are loving it.”
The show certainly reached a major crescendo as drummer Chris Frazier’s surprisingly entertaining drum solo gave way to “Juke Box Hero,” which forced the entire crowd to its feet to sing along. The power in which this song in particular was delivered is a true testament to just how wildly talented and devoted the current version of Foreigner is.
Clearly, with founding member Mick Jones’ health in question, this is the band that will continue the legacy of Foreigner and if Friday’s performance at the Downstream Casino is any indication, then the future is indeed bright for this band.
