The Indianapolis Colts lost their first game of the season against their divisional foe. The Jacksonville Jaguars contained the Colts rushing attack, but Philip Rivers made plays getting the Colts down the field in some aggressive play. However, the 17-year veteran threw two picks in key areas of the field which led to the loss.

Mack Injured

The Colts 2019 rushing leader when down with an injury in the early second quarter with what looked like a serious injury on a cut-upfield. Mack was carted off the field and there is still no news on his status. Eventually, he was listed as out in the middle of the 3rd quarter. This opened the door for Jordan Wilkins to score the first touchdown of the season. Wilkins made a few guys miss and a great broken tackle to cross the pylon.

What went wrong?

However, it wasn’t enough. The Jaguars made sure they came out aggressive on defense. The young, revamped defense made sure to play aggressive and held the Colts rushing attack in check. The Colts just looked flat and didn’t come out aggressive to make plays on offense to win the game.

Philip Rivers

Philip Rivers threw over 350 yards with a touchdown by two costly interceptions. The savvy veteran made multiple mistakes leading to some bad plays. Nyheim Hines scored the lone rushing touchdown but only rushed for 28 yards. As a total, the Colts only rushed for 88 yards against a defense which downgraded its talent from last season.

Receivers

Parris Campbell led the team in receiving with 6 catches for 71 yards. However, Hines scored the lone receiving touchdown give him two – one rushing one receiving – on the day. T.Y Hilton had a decent game with four catches for 63 yards, but dropped a pass on 4th down which would have kept the drive alive.

Defense

On the defensive side, Gardner Minshew looked like Tom Brady in his prime. Minshew threw 3 touchdowns and completed 19/20 passes with 17 yards on the day. The rushing game was held in check by the Colts defense as they only rushed for 91 yards and didn’t have a touchdown. The rookie Laviska Shenault made himself known by scoring a touchdown and catching three passes for 37 yards and looking very good in his opening.

Final Thoughts

Overall, the Colts let this one slip away and fell to 0-1 on the season while also being 0-1 in a competitive division. There’s no doubt the Colts will go back to Indianapolis next week against the Vikings and look to make improvements in the rushing game and the turnovers.
