The Chiefs and Orlando Brown Jr. made one late push, but ultimately couldn’t agree on a deal. Orlando didn’t feel the offer had enough security over the life of the deal.

In short, Brown would’ve had a deal that effectively paid $18.2 million per year, which ranked eighth among offensive tackles. He was looking for a deal at the top of the market. Minus the dummy year on the back end of the deal, the #Chiefs didn’t offer that.

Portner: “We got really close. We dealing with the Chiefs and we understand their position as well. I’m not gonna let these athletes sign a flashy contract without the substance or security there.”

Orlando Brown Jr. has not signed his $16.7 million franchise tender. Will he show up for the start of #Chiefs training camp or Week 1? Portner said those will be Brown’s decisions to make and everything is still being weighed. https://t.co/gsldAPXcID

The #Chiefs were willing to fully guarantee money through next season, but Orlando Brown’s camp wanted more security. So no deal for Brown, as expected. He can earn $16.7 million on the franchise tag this season if he signs it before Week 1. https://t.co/PqXEwoauOD

The #Chiefs and LT Orlando Brown made a final run at a long-term deal before this afternoon’s deadline but couldn’t reach an agreement. I spoke to Jammal Brown, who is serving as Orlando’s mentor. He said they didn’t feel comfortable with the lack of security in the deal.

The #Chiefs and OT Orlando Brown did not come to an agreement on a long-term deal, per agent Michael Portner. As @MikeGarafolo said recently, the gap was too large. Brown now will play it out.
