Both Chiefs GM Brett Veach and head coach Andy Reid were on hand today in Indianapolis as the NFL Scouting Combine gets underway. While the duo are in Indy to evaluate players for this April’s NFL Draft, both Veach and Reid met with reporters on Tuesday to revel in a second Super Bowl title in four years.
While Veach deserves ample praise for building a high-level roster around Patrick Mahomes, there have been some questions about they way he drafts the receiver position. Back in 2019, Veach traded up to take Mecole Hardman with the 56th pick while NFL star D.K. Metcalf fell to pick 64. Then, last season, Veach again took a receiver with a smaller frame trading back to take Skyy Moore when George Pickens was available.
While the jury is still out on Moore after playing just one year in the KC offense (and scoring a key touchdown in Super Bowl LVII), Veach was asked if he prefers smaller receivers.
“People tend to forget that there’s a lot of dialogue,” Veach told Starcade Media. “It’s not like Chiefs like smaller receivers, we like good football players. We’re looking for a cultural fit, how they fit with our coaching staff.”
Brett Veach addresses drafting Mecole Hardman & Skyy Moore over D.K. Metcalf and George Pickens.
While the Chiefs are likely to let Mecole Hardman walk into free agency after an ok, certainly not spectacular year in KC, the Seahawks have a star in D.K. Metcalf. In four years, Hardman had 151 catches for 2,088 yards with just 16 TDs. Metcalf has 306 catches for 4,208 yards and 35 TDs.
Through just one season, Pickens’ numbers have dwarfed Skyy Moore’s. Obviously, there is a lot to factor in to these situations like targets, role in the offense etc.
