Week 6 of the college football season is officially in the books and while some teams are separating themselves from the pact, others are slipping further into irrelevance.
Week 6 biggest winners
- Florida. For weeks now, we have fought against the idea of the Florida Gators being a good football team. With Kyle Trask at the helm at quarterback and the Gator defense showcasing its dominance against previously unbeaten Auburn, the time is definitely upon us to recognize that Florida might be for real. The Gators held Auburn to 269 total yards, 3.6 yards per carry and dominated the line of scrimmage from the outset in a 24-13 win.
- Stanford. The Cardinal were able to circle the wagons once again this week by getting a huge win over #15 Washington in a game that most certainly paves the way for Oregon to win the Pac 12 North with ease.
- Cale Garrett & The Mizzou defense. Since losing to Wyoming week 1, Missouri’s defense has been elite. They currently boast the 2nd ranked defense in the country and linebacker Cale Garrett has now scored THREE defensive touchdowns alone this season including a pick six against Troy on Saturday. The competition doesn’t improve for Missouri over the next few weeks as they take on Ole Miss, Vanderbilt and Kentucky which could elevate the defensive stats even more.
- Baylor. The Bears are 5-0 and ranked for the first time since Art Briles roamed the sidelines in Waco. Baylor went on the road Saturday and dominated previously ranked Kansas State 31-12. With OU and Texas clearly sitting at the top of the Big 12, Baylor has a chance to settle into third place this season which would be tremendous for a program not far removed from disaster.
Week 6 biggest losers
- Oklahoma State. After a big win over Kansas State and a national ranking, OSU went on the road against a mediocre Texas Tech team and laid a giant egg. Quarterback Spencer Sanders turned the ball over FIVE times in the defeat although running back Chuba Hubbard continues to impress. The Cowboys had a real shot to finish third in the league, but a 1-2 start in Big 12 play is not what Mike Gundy had in mind.
- Anyone that watched Iowa and Michigan. The Wolverine offense continued to struggle with Shea Patterson at QB (he threw for a paltry 147 yards and zero touchdowns). Iowa quarterback Nathan Stanley was no better with his 3 interceptions and zero touchdown performance. It was a game that really makes you appreciate 16-inning baseball games.
- The ACC Coastal division. Virginia Tech got a nice upset win over Miami on Saturday and we all appreciate what Mack Brown is doing at NC…That said, the division is horrendous. Virginia is a solid team and should make that ACC title game, which would mean each team in the division has made it to the title game in the past seven years.
- The dirty hit by Troy’s Travis Sailo. He went low and took out Missouri QB Kelly Bryant’s knee, knocking him out during the second quarter. There still has been no update on Bryant’s condition or probability of playing going forward but early indications are positive. Regardless, you can’t have hits like this in football today in any capacity.
