The Kansas City Chiefs made a bold and franchise altering move up from 27 to 10 in the 2017 NFL Draft. They selected quarterback Patrick Mahomes when they had a trusty veteran and fan favorite in Alex Smith. This is not the typical Chiefs move as they hadn’t taken a 1st round quarterback since 1983 when they whiffed on Dan Marino and Jim Kelly and instead took Todd Blackledge. A lot of Chiefs had never seen their team take a 1st round quarterback so this idea seemed foreign and far too risky! Maybe that is why when Mahomes was drafted some Chiefs fans were up in arms over this questionable decision, in their minds.
